ESPN REPORT: Another Mega Star Commits To Montreal Canadiens.
The National Hockey League trade deadline is just a few days away for the Montreal Canadiens. Given their position near the bottom of the NHL standings, they will undoubtedly try to offload this week.
Sean Monahan was traded to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a first-round pick in 2024, signaling the start of that process. In that trade, Montreal will also receive a conditional third-round pick, but it won’t be transferred until the Jets claim the Stanley Cup this year.
With eight goals in his first 12 games with the Jets, Monahan is solidifying his place at center ice and helping to make it happen. They certainly have a fantastic squad and have risen to the top of the Central Division rankings, so who knows? Maybe the Canadiens may acquire that additional pick in the near future.
What other selections might the Canadiens make? Tanner Pearson is the lone pending unrestricted free agent on the roster, so they don’t have a list of pending free agents that are certain to be traded. With just 11 points in 42 games, he isn’t having a great season, but he is a dependable veteran with Stanley Cup winning experience, so he might be moving.
The Canadiens might as well complete the transaction even if they only end up with a late-round draft pick. In addition, if the player you are shipping out has limited time left with your team, you might as well acquire something for them. Adding as many picks as possible at this time of year could result in a significant payout later on.
Over the years, we have seen a number of these kinds of agreements prove to be quite beneficial for the Canadiens. Sadly, several trade deadline agreements haven’t. These are the five worst trade deadline moves ever made by the Canadiens.
