Tennessee Titans initiate a dialogue
Nashville, Tennessee The offensive line of the Tennessee Titans needs support.
With the start of free agency on Monday, there’s the first chance for a rescue. Additionally, Mike Onwenu of the New England Patriots, an offensive tackle, might be on general manager Ran Carthon’s shopping list.
Monday, March 11, the first day of what the NFL refers to as the “legal tampering period,” is when the Titans can begin negotiations with players. Teams can sign free agents starting on Wednesday, March 13.
Does Carthon need to sign Onwenu? Let’s investigate.
First, the high points of his career:
Pro Football Writers Association 2020 All-Rookie Team: A versatile offensive lineman who can start at several different positions. Twenty games have been started by him at right guard, five at left guard, thirteen at right tackle, and three as a tight end with tackle eligibility.
No. Avoid doing it.
Onwenu and other offensive lineman under 30 are in high demand, particularly those who can cover the blind side of the quarterback.
Teams will fight for Onwenu, and even if the Titans have over $70 million in salary space, it would not be a good idea to spend too much on one player given the team’s other needs at wide receiver and in the secondary. There are plenty of tackles available in the draft, so the Titans may fill that need.
Onwenu is expected to sign a four-year contract with an average yearly salary of $14.5 million, according to Pro Football Focus.
Indeed. Put him on the roster
During the previous season, Onwenu played 850 snaps (656 at right tackle and 194 at right guard) and gave up three sacks and 23 pressures. He’s only had ten career penalties and has never given up more than three sacks in a season.
Onwenu finished 29th out of all NFL tackles in 2023. He has strong footwork and is a trustworthy pass protector and blocker.
The offensive line of the Titans would be instantly improved by Onwenu. The going rate for a quality offensive lineman is $14.5 million.
