Lewis Ferguson’s ascension has been rapid, but the British public has not really taken notice of it. The Scotland international’s achievements at Bologna, however, have since drawn interest from a wide range of organizations, including Wolver hampton Wanderers, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford in the Premier League.
Ferguson is the nephew of Rangers and Blackburn Rovers midfielder Barry and the son of former Scotland striker Derek. According to Sky Sports, Ferguson is being pursued by several Italian teams, including Napoli and Juventus, following his two seasons of outstanding play in Bologna, where he scored 13 goals and was named club captain. It doesn’t appear likely that he will stay in Emilia-Romagna for the upcoming season. What can he offer his numerous pursuers, and what kind of player is he?
Although Ferguson is usually listed as a number ten on team sheets and is considered an attacking midfielder, manager Thiago Motta has considerably more flexibility with Ferguson’s role. He effectively plays as an inside forward when in possession, drifting wide and cutting back in close to the box. Off the ball, he exploits his incredible stamina and never-ending desire to pursue lost causes to get back into deeper areas and serve as a defensive midfield shield.
To put it another way, he appears nearly everywhere, can fill a wide range of responsibilities depending on what his team requires, and his heat maps display red blots throughout the whole field of play. Despite not having elite speed, he is a true all-around midfielder with the stamina to play the entire 90 minutes.
