Former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord traded back to Pittsburgh Steelers due to…..

Syracuse will receive Kyle McCord, the former starting quarterback for Ohio State who signed up through the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month.

After paying the school a visit this past weekend, McCord said on Sunday that he has committed to play for the Orange in his final year.

He ranked 14th among quarterbacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a passer rating of 161.64 in his only season as a starter for the Buckeyes, throwing for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions. His efforts helped Ohio State remain unbeaten and in the running for the College Football Playoff until the final weekend of the regular season.

However, he fell short of the high bar set by his Ohio State predecessors, which included Dwayne Haskins Jr., Justin Fields, and C.J. Stroud, all of whom were Heisman Trophy finalists in their first seasons as starts. McCord was chosen for the Big Ten third team.

McCord’s debut did not guarantee him a spot as the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes the next year.

Coach Ryan Day hinted at a rivalry building the day before McCord entered his name in the portal, but he wasn’t committed to him staying at the top.

Earlier in the season, McCord and redshirt freshman Devin Brown had a close competition for the starting spot, which persisted until September. Before McCord was selected the starting lineup permanently, two games had to pass.

McCord is able to return to the Northeast thanks to the transfer to Syracuse. He was raised in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and went to St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia for high school, where he excelled as a five-star recruit.

The Orange have a spot vacant on the depth chart for a starting quarterback, which might be the bigger lure.

Garrett Shrader, a Mississippi State transfer who has been starting since 2021, is set to leave Syracuse. Braden Davis, a redshirt freshman this fall, and Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a redshirt sophomore, are the only other scholarship quarterbacks who will be returning to Syracuse. This season, both got the start in Shrader’s stead when he wasn’t available. Another quarterback from Macon, Georgia, and three-star prospect Jakhari Williams has verbally committed to the team for the 2017 recruiting class.

Fran Brown, a native of New Jersey and former defensive backs coach at Georgia, was hired by the Orange to take over as head coach after Dino Babers was ousted last month after eight seasons. They finished 6-6 this season and play South Florida on Thursday in the Boca Raton Bowl.

McCord had visited Lincoln earlier in the week and looked at Nebraska before focusing on Syracuse.

However, the likelihood of him joining the Cornhuskers appeared to diminish because Dylan Raiola, one of the top-ranked high school quarterbacks in the class of 2024, has also been targeted by Nebraska.
