ESPN REPORT: Details on Jason Kidd suspension.

NEW YORK The NBA announced on Friday that Jason Kidd, the first-year coach of the Brooklyn Nets, had been suspended for the team’s first two regular season games following his guilty plea in July to driving while intoxicated.

Kidd will miss the Nets’ home opener on November 1st versus the Miami Heat and their opening on October 30th against the Cleveland Cavaliers. On November 3, Kidd will coach for the first time during the regular season against the Orlando Magic.

During Kidd’s suspension, lead assistant coach Lawrence Frank will probably take over as head coach.

Kidd stated, “I think we all knew that was going to come at some point,” following practice on Friday at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. “You have to take responsibility for your actions, and I agree that the league suspended you. Guys need to step up if a player is out, and my coaching staff is more than capable of doing so.”

The penalty was anticipated because of league history, which calls for a two-game suspension for pleas of guilty to DWI-related crimes.

Nets general manager Billy King released a statement saying, “We look forward to Jason leading our team against Orlando and the rest of the year. The decision is consistent with what the league has done in the past.”

In the Hamptons neighborhood of Water Mill on eastern Long Island, on July 15, 2012, Kidd crashed his Cadillac SUV into a utility pole. He was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving and put on a year-long interim probation. Kidd is required to perform community service by educating Long Island schoolchildren about the risks associated with driving after intoxication.

Before the crash, he was on his way back from a charitable event. According to a Southampton Town Police report, Kidd had bloodshot and glassy eyes, was unsteady on his feet, and smelled strongly of alcohol. He received treatment at a nearby hospital for minor wounds.
