Report: The Notre Dame Fighting Irish star is been suspended from all sports for a placing bets against….

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — On Tuesday, U.S. Representative Tim Roemer (Indiana–Third District) joined three well-known Irish head coaches and the president of the University of Notre Dame, Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., in advocating for a ban on legal betting on high school, collegiate, and Olympic sporting events.

Father Malloy, along with assistant athletic directors Mike Karwoski and Chris Reynolds (who both work in the compliance department) and coaches Muffet McGraw (women’s basketball), Bob Davie (football), and Mike Brey (men’s basketball), expressed support for a ban on legal wagering on amateur sports at a press conference held at the University. Men’s basketball coach Mike Lightfoot and Bethel College president Dr. Norman Bridges joined them in their support. The idea is the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s top legislative objective, according to Doris Dixon, who represents the organization.

“The best of amateur athletics is represented by the recent championship win of the Notre Dame women’s basketball team and the ongoing success of all of our Hoosier student-athletes,” Roemer stated.

“The biggest danger to our treasured tradition of fair and honest competition is the pressure that high-stakes gamblers nationwide put on their peers.”

Legislation that would forbid legal wagering on amateur sports was presented by Roemer and a coalition of bipartisan House lawmakers last month. The only state that currently allows gambling on collegiate sports is Nevada. A similar plan sponsored by Roemer was overwhelmingly supported by the House Judiciary Committee in the previous session of Congress, and the Senate Commerce Committee also unanimously backed it.

According to Roemer, “we came very close to putting the interests of student-athletes over those of the casino industry in the last session of Congress.”

“I implore my congressional colleagues to grant passage of this crucial legislation in response to the appeal of these outstanding college administrators and coaches present today.

“As long as the government supports legal betting in Nevada, you cannot effectively combat illegal gambling or even expect people to take this issue seriously.”
