Head coach Kirk Ferentz recently chastised ESPN for damaging players’ careers and forcing the dismissal of college football coaches. Given that his Hawkeyes are 10-2 and will play in the Big Ten Championship the following week, the 68-year-old coach looks to have plenty of job security this season.
Ferentz is still dissatisfied, though.

Throughout his 24 years with the Hawkeyes, Ferentz has witnessed the evolution of the sport at the collegiate level. In a recent interview with On3, Ferentz stated that he believes coaching has become more difficult in the modern day and blamed cable networks for this:

Although Ferentz may not agree with all of the media attention that the Hawkeyes and other teams receive, he nonetheless gains from it. Ferentz’s annual salary as the Hawkeyes’ head coach is estimated to be $7 million.
ESPN’s promotion of the sport over the past three decades has been the primary cause of the growth in coach wages. It permits broadcast contracts to go up in price while bringing intrigue and drama to the sport.
Because of the publicity, athletes and coaches are more closely scrutinized. However, Ferentz gains from the attention as long as he can maintain his winning ways while running an honorable program.
