Missouri’s Kansas City Following the team’s Week 14 loss to Buffalo, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not hold back in denouncing the officiating crew’s handling of an offensive offsides call against receiver Kadarius Toney.
The NFL wasn’t holding back when it came to fining them for their actions on Saturday.
Reid and Mahomes received fines from the NFL totaling $100,000 and $50,000, respectively, for their criticism of the refereeing during their postgame remarks. Along with his criticism of the officiating crew, Mahomes was also called for unsportsmanlike behavior, which is characterized as verbal or other non-physical misconduct against an official. Mahomes was not given a penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior throughout the match.
The fines are the highest the NFL has imposed this season that do not involve a suspension.
There was 1:25 left in the game when the dispute started. The Chiefs were awarded a 49-yard touchdown when Travis Kelce caught a pass from Mahomes for a 25-yard gain and then tossed a lateral across the field to Toney, who dashed into the end zone for an additional 24 yards. However, down judge Mike Carr cautioned Toney for lining up offsides.
Reid twice described the result as “a bit embarrassing” for the NFL following the game. An official calling an aggressive player offsides without warning them was unusual, he claimed.
Reid stated, “Usually I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game. I never use any of this as excuses.” “For that to happen in the National Football League is a little embarrassing.”
Following the call, Mahomes was clearly agitated on the sidelines. Later, when discussing the play with Bills quarterback Josh Allen after the game, TV cameras captured him shouting profanity. Following Reid on Sunday, Mahomes repeated his head coach at the podium.
“We discuss it, you know? You point to the referee and do all that kind of stuff, and they warn you, and there was no warning the entire time, and then you have to wait until the last minute of the game to make a call like that, which is difficult,” Mahomes remarked. “It’s difficult because, whether we win or lose, there will always be another game, and we’ll still be talking about the referees, which is not what we want for the NFL or football in general.”
It wasn’t until Thursday that Toney answered the phone, denying that he had been warned about his alignment on the line of scrimmage during the game. Toney’s comments on Saturday did not result in a fine.

This week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell defended the call on Toney during league meetings in Texas.
“It’s a little ironic, in my opinion, that you bring up officiating when, as far as I can tell, almost everyone agrees that the officials were spot on,” Goodell said. It is their responsibility to signal a foul. That foul was unquestionably committed. It was unquestionably the proper decision. It goes without saying that we or our officials would have faced criticism if you hadn’t called that.
The NFL last punished a coach and player this severely when it fined the New Orleans Saints $350,000, head coach Dennis Allen $100,000, defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen $50,000, and defensive end Cameron Jordan $50,000 for fabricating an injury during a game against Tampa Bay in December of last year. After an appeal, the fines were later reversed.
