FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts: According to a person familiar with the issue, the New England Patriots have decided to appoint Jerod Mayo as the team’s first Black head coach, replacing Bill Belichick.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t made the announcement, said that details were still being finalized on Friday. Mayo spent eight seasons in the NFL and, in 2014, received a Super Bowl ring while playing for the Patriots.

The day after Belichick decided to leave the Patriots following a 24-year tenure that featured six Super Bowl victories, Mayo was hired.

Following the Patriots’ unusual announcement last offseason that they were offering the assistant a long-term agreement, Mayo shot to the top of the list of potential Belichick successors. During the previous two seasons, Mayo called plays for the Patriots defense in conjunction with fellow linebackers coach Steve Belichick and Belichick’s son.

Despite having a 4-13 record this year, New England’s defense has maintained its top spot in a number of categories even after rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez and starting linebacker Matt Judon suffered season-ending injuries early in the game.

Although the details of Mayo’s contract before the 2018 season are unknown, it was signed after the 37-year-old had interviews for head coaching positions in Philadelphia and Carolina the previous two seasons.Robert Kraft, the owner of the Patriots, pledged to act swiftly to attempt to fill the void after the team announced its decision to break ways with Belichick on Thursday.

A return to the postseason for the Patriots, who have missed the playoffs three of the last four seasons and haven’t won a postseason game since the 2018 campaign, is Kraft’s stated mandate for the next coach.

“Our goal is to find a replacement who can lead us to victory in the postseason,” stated Kraft. You have to believe that this is one of my two most valuable possessions, just after my family. When we don’t win games, I get quite angry. It is valid for the entire week. I hereby swear to you that I will be committed to doing everything within my power to ensure that we are positioning ourselves for long-term success.
