Baker Mayfield formally signed a new three-year deal with the Buccaneers on Wednesday. The quarterback for the Pro Bowl will remain in Tampa Bay. The Bucs secured the services of their potential signal-caller three days prior to Mayfield’s scheduled unrestricted free agent status.
Mayfield split 2022 between the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams before playing the whole 2023 season on a one-year, prove-it contract with Tampa Bay. Following the club’s agreement on a two-year contract extension with future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans, Mayfield’s new deal became the first subsequent move. With the Buccaneers in 2023, Mayfield revitalized his career and placed third in the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year voting. With 4,044 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes, just 10 interceptions, and a 94.6 passer rating, he achieved career highs.

Along with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Mayfield was one of just two players in 2023 with 28 or more throwing touchdowns and 10 or fewer interceptions. Along with Tom Brady, he became the second player in team history to throw for 4,000 yards or more, 25 touchdowns or more, and 10 or fewer interceptions in a single season (2022). In Lambeau Field history, Mayfield became the first visiting quarterback to record a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Having accomplished the feat in both playoff games, he became the first quarterback in team history to record a postseason game with 300+ passing yards and three touchdowns or more. Mayfield led the NFL in passing through the Divisional Round of the playoffs, finishing 48 of 77 passes (62.3%) for 686 yards and six touchdowns against just two interceptions, good for a passer rating of 106.3. With six passing touchdowns, Mayfield’s passer rating of 106.3 is second-highest among quarterbacks in franchise history during the postseason.
