ESPN REPORT: The Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach is Being Fired Due to…
Philadelphia On Monday, the Eagles dismissed head coach Doug Pederson, capping a collaboration that resulted in the first and only Super Bowl victory in the history of the city.
Pederson was expected to stay on as head coach even though the team finished 4-11-1 this year. However, despite having several meetings with team owner Jeffrey Lurie over the past week, sources claimed that his boss remained unconvinced that Pederson had a good plan in place for handling the team’s numerous problems, which ranged from managing Carson Wentz’s situation to resolving an offense that placed 28th in passing yards per game (207.9 yards) and 26th in scoring (20.9 points per game) in 2020.
Pederson’s decision to move on was revealed by Lurie on Monday during a video press conference.
“My primary loyalty is to what will bewarmest wishes for the upcoming three, four, or five years for the Philadelphia Eagles and our supporters. It’s not predicated on whether someone should be employed or fired; that’s a distinct standard, according to Lurie.

The question is not, ‘Did Doug deserve to be let go?’ No, he was not deserving of being released. That’s not my perspective, and it’s not the standard by which the evaluation process is conducted.”
Lurie stated that the decision to fire Pederson had nothing to do with Wentz or any particular group of players, but rather had to do with the offense’s general decline in a season that saw the NFL set a record for points scored. Although Lurie did not guarantee Wentz would play again the following season, he did say the new coaching staff would help the quarterback get back on track.
“I don’t believe that should be decided by any owner. CarsonFor me and, I believe, almost every member of our team, this quarterback had an excellent first four years of play, on par with some of the greatest quarterbacks in league history. There are probably a number of reasons why the fifth year was clearly unsatisfactory, according to Lurie.
“From my perspective, we possess both a skill and an advantage. He’s a really kind man. All he wants is for Philadelphia to win big and bring home Lombardi trophies. This man never stops. He is acting with the correct intentions. He is incredibly committed both in and out of season. He’s just what you need. And while it’s important for us as a team to be able to return him to the elite level of development that he was capable of, we also need to acknowledge that there have been a lot of quarterbacks in their fourth and fifth seasons; if you follow this trend, you’ll find a plethora of quarterbacks who have only played one season. When you realize that the touchdown-to-interception ratio is not what you desire, that’s your reaction. And we’re talking about some amazing people like Ben and Peyton and those kinds of guys.”
Eagles: Season Rankings for 2020
The Eagles experienced their worst season since Andy Reid left as head coach in 2012.”So I take more of a longer view of this was not the best season for our offense,” Lurie said. “The season was not good. In addition, Carson had a disappointing season compared to his prior performances; he is highly reparable, and I have every expectation that he will reach his full potential.”
Pederson described his role as head coach of the Eagles as “an absolute honor serving” in a statement issued by the team.
“As difficult as it is to say goodbye, I will always look back on my time here with appreciation and respect,” he stated. The memories we created together here will last a lifetime.a particular spot in my heart. I express my gratitude to the City of Philadelphia for welcoming me and this team. I genuinely value the enthusiasm you bring to everything you do, whether it’s at home, on the road, or in the community. You were always there for us, no matter what. I am really pleased of what we achieved together, even if I am sad that this chapter of my career is coming to a close. One aspect of our team never changed despite all the ups and downs: our unshakeable dedication to fighting through hardship and achieving our objectives as a team rather than as individuals. Nothing illustrates it more than the day we commemorated the first Super Bowl victory in Eagles history alongsideour city. All of us will always treasure that memories.”
According to insiders, Lurie wasn’t convinced by Pederson’s intentions for his coaching staff either. Pederson advocated for Press Taylor, the quarterbacks coach and coordinator of the passing game, to be promoted to offensive coordinator instead of selecting a more seasoned applicant. There was still the unanswered matter of how to replace defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who intends to take a year off from football in 2021.
After suffering a severe regression in his fifth season, Wentz was benched in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts for the final three months of play. According to previous reports from league insiders, Wentz intended to request a trade in the winter because his relationship with Pederson was irreparably damaged. The problems with trustsources stated that although Pederson had previously claimed that his relationship with Wentz was good, the two still work well together.
Wentz’s likelihood of remaining in Philadelphia has increased dramatically as a result of Pederson’s departure, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
According to sources, the Eagles offense in 2020 lacked identity, partly due to a large and disparate group of consultants and coaches brought in during the offseason who had difficulty coordinating. Quarterbacking became an uphill battle without a clear vision for the offense, and both Wentz and Pederson were drowned out by the cacophony of voices, according to insiders.
Regarding Hurts, an April second-round draft selection, Pederson was evasive about whether he hada feeling that, should the Eagles decide to part ways with Wentz, they had found their franchise quarterback of the future. Pederson’s handling of the season’s penultimate game, a 20-14 loss to Washington that saw Hurts benched in favor of Nate Sudfeld, raised concerns about whether or not he had lost the players’ trust.
