Brett Baty of the Mets is beaming after using a phone booth to help him get comfortable.

ATLANTA — Brett Baty was too energized by the end of the eighth inning on Monday night to go straight to the dugout. With the bases loaded and two runs ahead, Austin Riley of the Atlanta Braves hit a ground ball that the third baseman for the New York Mets fielded cleanly to maintain the lead. So Baty stood there on the field for a little while longer, his arms aloft. He started pumping up the seasoned shortstop Francisco Lindor when he saw him, slapping his own glove in celebration and grinning broadly.

There was never a scene like that in the previous season.

This season, after making a play, Baty has almost always shown a hint of happiness.

“He’s in a really, really good spot and he understands that positive energy will improve his performance,” Lindor remarked. “He plays better when he maintains his high energy, happiness, and positive outlook. We’re hoping he continues at that caliber. He will find it challenging to maintain his positive attitude at all times, but if he can manage it for 160 games, he will have an extremely successful season.

Perhaps the most encouraging development for the Mets in their first 11 games has been Baty’s play. Following a terrible rookie campaign, he appears to be a totally different player.
