Shane Pinto, a center for the Senators, will miss 41 games due to his involvement in sports betting, the NHL said on Thursday morning. Since the 1940s, Pinto is the first NHL player to get a suspension for engaging in sports gambling.

The league released a statement saying, “The League’s investigation found no evidence that Pinto made any wagers on NHL games.” “The NHL will not be providing any additional comments as they consider this matter closed, barring the release of new information.”

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the league started looking into Pinto over the summer and has been looking into him more recently.

Pinto, 22, was chosen by Ottawa in the first round of the 2019 NHL draft. He is now in his fourth season as a member of the squad. Pinto participated in all 82 games last season, tallying 20 goals and 15 assists for the Senators after making just 17 total appearances in his previous two seasons.

Due to his status as an unsigned restricted free agent, Pinto has not yet participated in a game this season. He hasn’t been able to come to an agreement on a new contract with the team. Ottawa has not yet located a viable trade partner, and Pinto has not yet accepted his qualifying offer.
