Re-Entry of a Louisville star into the Transfer Portal

Walker is currently this cycle’s fourth Cardinal to reenter the portal.

LOUISVILLE, KY: According to reports, one of Louisville’s biggest offseason acquisitions for the football team is moving on.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, there is a “current expectation” that defensive end Tyler Baron, who switched his transfer commitments from Ole Miss to Louisville this past January following four seasons with Tennessee, will re-enter the transfer portal.
Baron, along with former Vols teammate and stepbrother Wesley Walker, is the second player today to re-enter the portal following his transfer to Louisville earlier in the cycle. Both offensive tackle Reuben Unije and running back Peny Boone left the Cardinals before spring ball.

Since the start of the 15-day spring transfer window on April 16, nine Cards have moved total. Counting the four individuals who have re-enrolled, they have now had 23 athletes leave the program total this cycle.

The 260-pound, 6-foot-5 edge rusher recently had his greatest season to date. Baron, who started all but the season-opening game and participated in all 12 regular season games, was third on the Vols in tackles for loss (10.5) and second in sacks (6.0), all of which were career highs. In addition, he recorded two pass breakups, a touchdown from a recovered fumble, and 28 tackles (16 solo).

Since his arrival, the Knoxville, Tennessee, native has contributed significantly to Tennessee’s front seven each season. Over his four years with the team, Baron participated in 48 games and 19 starts. He finished with 101 total stops (50 solo), 27.0 for loss, 13.5 sacks, three pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery for a score.

Despite losing a number of players to free agency, Louisville has been successful in offsetting their losses. They have On3’s top portal class in college football, and they have secured 22 commitments thus far through the portal.

With an overall record of 10-4 (7-1 in the ACC) and a trip to the program’s first-ever ACC Championship Game, the Cardinals concluded their 2023 campaign. The team’s second season under head coach Jeff Brohm is set to begin on Saturday, August 31 at L&N versus Austin Peay.
