PORTLAND, OREGON (AP) — On Tuesday night, Oregon State elevated defensive coordinator Trent Bray to head coach, promptly succeeding Jonathan Smith, who departed for Michigan State.

Since the middle of the 2021 campaign, Bray—who attended Oregon State as well—has been the defensive coordinator for the Beavers.

Athletic director of Oregon State Scott Barnes said in a statement, “The connection and trust he has built with our student-athletes is unmatched.” “His enthusiasm and tenacity as head coach will serve as a driving force behind the program’s ongoing success.”

On Saturday, the day after the 21st-ranked Beavers’ regular-season finale loss to rival Oregon, Smith was appointed as Michigan State’s coach. Oregon State (8-4, 5-4 Pac-12) is currently awaiting their bowl assignment.
