Oregon’s Portland (AP) Defensive coordinator Trent Bray was promoted to head coach at Oregon State on Tuesday night, taking over for Jonathan Smith, who left for Michigan State.
Bray, who also attended Oregon State, has been the Beavers’ defensive coordinator since the midway point of the 2021 season.
“The connection and trust he has built with our student-athletes is unmatched,” Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes said in a statement. “The program’s continued success will be fueled by his zeal and perseverance as head coach.”
Smith was named Michigan State’s new coach on Saturday, the day following the 21st-ranked Beavers’ defeat to rival Oregon in the regular-season finale. A bowl assignment for Oregon State (8-4, 5-4 Pac-12) is still pending.
