In a dramatic turn of events at the Hungarian GP, Red Bull’s “Checo” Pérez and Mercedes Benz’s George Russell faced a disastrous day. Pérez crashed into the wall with six minutes and 45 seconds remaining, finishing sixteenth, while Russell, the pole position winner at the last Grand Prix in Silverstone, ended up seventeenth. Both drivers were eliminated in the first round of qualifying.
The session was heavily affected by the wet track and the red flag caused by Pérez’s crash, which happened with six minutes and 45 seconds left. Besides Pérez and Russell, the other drivers who failed to make it to the second round of qualifying were Kick Sauber’s Guangyu Zhou, who finished eighteenth, and Alpine’s French duo, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, who finished nineteenth and twentieth, respectively.
