After sustaining a strong punch to the face in the opening round, Angela Carini abruptly pulled out of her fight against Imane Khelif. The Italian fighter asked her team to end the battle after just 46 seconds of action in the Round of 16. Khelif emerged victorious right away. The controversy stems from Khelif’s negative results on the testosterone and gender tests. During the 2023 World Championships, the Algerian boxer displayed XY chromosomes, which is the standard configuration for the male gender. Since Khelif is a boxer competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, there have been many questions raised concerning his gender identification and sexual orientation.
