According to the most recent rumor from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the New England Patriots are still “likely” to trade former first-round choice Mac Jones this summer, despite Bill Belichick’s dismissal.
But despite going through a turbulent three seasons with the Patriots, Jones seems to be hanging onto the belief that he can turn things around in New England.
NFL source Dov Kleiman reports that the once-promising young quarterback liked a picture of himself with Roger Goodell from his draft year on Twitter, along with the message “run it back.”
Even if social media likes don’t always translate into deals or endorsements, Jones still seems to want to prove that he wants to play for the New England Patriots under head coach Jerod Mayo.
At Mayo’s opening news conference, Jones was seen wearing training clothes. According to Greg Bedard, this evidently infuriated his teammates, who said he had cleared out his locker at the end of the season.
The Patriots have the third overall pick in the NFL Draft, but even with Mayo’s recent indications that he wants to select a quarterback, he hasn’t given the impression that the franchise is set on moving Jones.
Jones would probably serve as the backup to whatever the Patriots choose to bring into the quarterback room even if they decide to give him another season. In the event that New England moves down and skips the quarterback position at No. 3, as per a recent report, they are reportedly looking to sign a veteran in free agency.
It appears like New England will have their pick of the litter in free agency with the availability of quarterbacks Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings and Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who both played for the Patriots in Cleveland under offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
This also casts doubt on Jones’s ability to stay in Foxboro. Who’s to say the Patriots don’t attempt to replicate what the New York Jets failed to do with Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson in the previous summer if they sign a veteran in free agency? The 35-year-old Cousins may be signed by the Patriots to serve as both the team’s quarterback and Jones’ mentor until the latter’s retirement.
