The Philadelphia Eagles were defeated 32–9 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to end their postseason run. The offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, who is now promoting the forthcoming thriller, the Australian NRL rugby season, got down with us for an exclusive chat to explain why.

The inaugural NRL Telstra Premiership season is set to take place in America, specifically in the city that will host Super Bowl LVIII. The Sea Eagles vs. Rabbitohs and the Roosters vs. Broncos games at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will be the first games of the season on March 2, 2024. Prior to entering the NFL, Mailata was a player for the Rabbitohs. He told EssentiallySports that it would be a unique experience for Americans. And having endured the Eagles’ undoubtedly dismal 2023 season, he is ecstatic for the upcoming “refreshing” season.

Mailata acknowledged the Eagles’ mistakes over the season in an exclusive interview with us. He disclosed that the “execution and communication” were the main causes of the Eagles’ defeat. The offensive lineman, 26, stated, “We didn’t execute.” From a coaching perspective, there was a great deal of miscommunication, and from the players’ perspective, we weren’t performing. And that’s a mixture—a terrible combination that spells catastrophe. We did not sufficiently address those problems. And for that reason, we bled away gradually.

Mailata realized that a change was imminent for their team after a dismal 2023 season in which they lost six of their final seven games. Brian Johnson, the offensive coordinator, was fired shortly after the Bucs blowout. They have now brought on Kellen Moore, a former offensive coordinator for the Chargers and Cowboys, for the upcoming campaign.

Mailata had already voiced his delight and his hope that Moore would steer the Eagles in a different path. The Eagles anticipated that the path would be similar to their successful start to the season—a 10-1 record. Because any divergence might lead to worse outcomes than all of the above, including more criticism, blame in Philadelphia, and staff termination.

The Eagles’ difficult playoff defeat was indicative of their problems since December. As the reigning NFC champions, their incredible season quickly took a turn for the worse following their bye week. The Eagles’ fall was characterized by subpar play, disengagement, injuries, defeats to inferior teams, and uninspiring blowouts. The Bucs pass rush put pressure on Jalen Hurts, causing him to inadvertently ground the ball in his end zone, leading to a safety. Soon after, Tampa Bay’s Trey Palmer scored a 56-yard touchdown after some shoddy tackles and pursuit. The game was virtually lost by that point, with the Eagles down 25 to 9, and there was no turning back.
