ESPN REPORT: So Sad, Louisville Basketball Head Coach Has Been Issued A…

A rule modification brought an end to the fight of the foul.

The NCAA released a new regulation on Wednesday, following Louisville coach Jeff Walz’s rebuke for objecting to an official’s intentional foul call with two seconds remaining in the Cardinals’ 73-72 loss to Syracuse on Sunday, as well as the institution’s fine. According to Walz, it will cover both men’s and women’s basketball.

“Fouling near the end of the game is an acceptable coaching and playing strategy,” reads the rule interpretation/clarification. In order to stop their opponents from attempting a final shot of the quarter, teams also foul when they have “fouls to give” toward the end of the quarter. Officials are supposed to assess how players behave and decide if unlawful contact is intentional, personal, or grounds for disqualification. These actions sometimes neatly fit into one bucket, but on rare occasions, one activity might fit into more than one bucket. When this happens, a choice must be made that complies with the letter and spirit of the game regulations.”

While joking that he would chop wood to cover the $20,000 fine, Walz expressed satisfaction with the clarification, saying it relieves teams of the burden of having to make a “judgment call.”

Regarding Louisville’s game at Boston College on Thursday night, “I think it’s good for coaches to know that because going into our game tomorrow night, I was really not sure if you can foul at the end of the game anymore,” Walz stated. “… Now that there’s clarification, it’s going to help the officials know what’s going on during the game, so I feel good about that.”
