Emiliano Martinez, the custodian for Aston Villa, has reaffirmed his goals of winning a trophy with the team and making it into the Champions League.
At the pre-match press conference on the eve of our Europa Conference League matchup with AZ Alkmaar, the 31-year-old spoke about a variety of subjects and complimented Unai Emery, naming him as one of the top five coaches in the world right now.
Given Villa’s strong Premier League start and the aspirations of the owners, coach, and players, it is clear that they want to achieve even greater things in the years to come, even though the team’s immediate focus is on a challenging test in the Netherlands.
Martinez discussed that and restated his long-held statements, saying that while he enjoys his time at the team, his short-term goals are to win a trophy and play Champions League football.
“I’ve chosen to stay here because I believe they can match [his and the club’s] ambitions. “It’s a club that aspires to win a trophy and be in the Champions League,” he said to the press before kickoff.

It’s fantastic to hear the Argentine World Cup winner speak so passionately and drivenly about wanting to reach that goal while wearing a Villa shirt. With Emery leading the team and the new managerial structure in place, this is possible. as well as the quality within the playing squad that continues to improve, it’s hoped that we’re in as strong a position as ever to achieve that.
Though long-term goals are admirable, right now we need to concentrate on AZ and get a win that could be critical to our chances of making it to the Europa Conference League knockout round this season.
Beyond that, we’ll keep working to place among the top four, and despite our early Carabao Cup exit, hopefully this year will mark the end of our trophy drought.
Martinez will be instrumental in that process not only because of his skill on the field but also because of his leadership qualities, experience, and winning mentality, which he brought with him from his success in Argentina.
Everyone at the club is pushing for Champions League play this season and beyond, but it would take a significant accomplishment for Emery and the players to win a European trophy within the first two years of his leadership. To maintain that run, we need to win this week.
