Cheese Curds, 2/22: Will Green Bay make a major splash with free agents?

Even though Super Bowl LVIII was just two weeks ago, the NFL offseason and the start of free agency in March are already causing a lot of excitement. In less than three weeks, on March 13, the new league year will get underway. In the meanwhile, teams will have the chance to start setting the stage for significant free agent pursuits at this week’s NFL Combine.

In the interim, the Green Bay Packers will need to decide what to do with a few large contracts that they have on file, and discussions with agents early next week will likely play a role in those decisions. However, the Packers may make some major free agent moves if they do manage to clear some salary cap space before the league season begins, especially at one of their areas of most need.

After all, Brian Gutekunst hasn’t hesitated to commit to a spot in the NFL Draft and in free agency. The best example of Gutekunst double down at two positions is still the 2019 offseason. Adrian Amos, a safety, and Preston and Za’Darius Smith, two edge rushers, were signed that year before Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage, first-round draft selections, who were selected at the same positions.

This year, safety continues to be the rational area where that strategy would be appropriate. That position is the clear favorite for a double-dip, and the lack of options on the roster makes it even more likely. There are some intriguing draft prospects expected to go in the first three rounds of the draft, and there are some very good players who could become available in free agency.

Let’s examine some news from two veteran safeties who may be Packers free agents in a few weeks in today’s curds. You can be sure that we’ll be attentively examining draft-eligible safety at the Combine the following week.

Although Van Ness was selected with the 13th overall choice in the previous year’s draft, it’s important to keep in mind that he turned 22 last summer after declaring as a redshirt sophomore. Van Ness, like Rashan Gary before him, will try to build on a successful rookie season finale, even if his first full NFL offseason will be spent acclimating to a slightly different defensive scheme.

Safety Xavier McKinney of the New York Giants is highlighted here as a potential fit for the Packers. McKinney is a versatile player who can line up deep or closer to the line of scrimmage.

Giants could apply the transition tag on Xavier McKinney, according to a Big Blue View report.
This rumor, though, indicates that the Giants might instead use one of the tags on McKinney. That would allow them to match any contract offer he would obtain from other parties, but they would not be paid if they chose not to.
