Although every coaching position is already taken, there is still a chance that one will become available before the offseason ends. The New York Jets ought to go ahead and do it, according to one ESPN commentator.

Even during the calm period of the offseason before the start of the new league season, chaos is never far from the New York Jets.

From Aaron Rodgers’ dark retreats to Geno Smith’s fractured jaw and all in between, New York does a fantastic job of keeping the fan base guessing.

But according to ESPN’s daring offseason move column, the Jets take a turn that would be disastrous even for them.

On October 3, 2021, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA, Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel responds to a call made by an official during overtime at MetLife Stadium involving the New York Jets.

Aaron Schatz believes that New York should take the (obviously ridiculous) step of firing head coach Robert Saleh and hiring former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel in his place.

“Ahead of the 2024 season, there are too many good head-coaching candidates on the market and too many last-chance coaches,” Schatz stated. Why not implement the modification right away?

Even though sacking Saleh in the off-season seems unlikely, there would be good reason for it. Although bad quarterback play is primarily to blame for the Jets’ lack of success under Saleh, Saleh is also partially to fault.

After the season, there were several reports of dysfunction, mistrust, and scapegoating of his offensive. If Rodgers’ destiny hadn’t been connected to the administration, there’s a strong probability that he would have already been dismissed. Saleh is in charge of hiring coaches and making decisions on both sides of the ball, despite Rodgers’ considerable influence. Saleh can’t be safely penciled in as the long-term solution because New York hasn’t performed well enough.

The Jets’ defense, which has finished in the top six in DVOA for the past two seasons, might suffer if Saleh were to go. Schatz wrote. However, Vrabel’s addition ought to facilitate better game and locker room management. Vrabel is a far more analytically sound coach during games and may be able to manage Aaron Rodgers more effectively.

Vrabel was not one of the few coaches hired during this cycle, despite expectations that he would be hired shortly after leaving Tennessee due to a perceived organizational control issue.

Without a rift between Saleh and ownership, a move this late would be highly unusual, although many would consider it an improvement. If Vrabel had any reputation from his time with the Titans, it was as a personnel optimizer. Saleh is probably unable to say that, and if the Jets’ summer is not a huge success, it might come back to haunt them.
