August 4—TUPELO — Jimmy Long, a stalwart at one of Mississippi’s most prestigious men’s apparel stores, passed away.
Jimmy Long passed away in Oxford late on Wednesday. His father, Charles Long, was a co-founder of MLM Clothiers in the 1940s. His age was 79 years.
Before retiring in November 2017, Long contributed to the five decades of operation of the downtown Tupelo clothes business. According to friends and relatives, Long’s fingerprints are all over the store, which is the oldest men’s specialty shop in the state.
His passion, even after over 50 years in the industry, was men’s wear.
Joe Yarber, who joined Multilevel Marketing (MLM) in 1980 and took over as its sole owner in early 2017, said, “He was a jewel and he’s going to be missed.” “He was an excellent man. His passion was clothes, and he loved them. We had a wonderful working relationship and he was a pleasure to work with.
Consistently advocating for “dressing better than you have to,” Long was frequently the most elegantly attired individual present.
“What I’ve enjoyed the most are the relationships, with the people in the community and people in the business,” he stated in 2017.
Long was regarded as the “general” by his peers because he was assertive and decisive. Over the years, many of his connections have called Yarber to relate their experiences and their losses.
“He was an iconic figure in the industry and people knew him from New York to California,” Yarber stated. “He helped a lot of businesses and people along the way, and he’ll be missed.”
Coach Gary Smith stated in January that he wanted supporters to notice Nashville SC’s shift from 2023 to 2024 as soon as possible, the day before the team’s preseason training camp got underway in Florida.
Even though Smith may not have had much control over the main causes, Sunday’s MLS season opener against the New York Red Bulls was largely the same.
Despite being without designated player Sam Surridge and 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar, as well as having two additional players sidelined by injuries, Nashville appeared outmatched against the highly motivated and nearly full-strength Red Bulls, but managed to salvage a 0-0 tie at Geodis Park.
With a 53% possession percentage, RBNY outshot Nashville 16–5, and they scored 1.5 anticipated goals compared to Nashville’s 0.2. But a few lucky breaks and goalie Joe Willis’s 60th career shutout allowed a thinly manned team to earn a point.
Early on, Nashville made an unsuccessful attempt at a high press. But the Red Bulls are all about applying relentless pressure, and when Nashville had a strong few minutes, RBNY demonstrated that skill.
In addition to Mukhtar’s absence and his ability to create plays, the Red Bulls blocked Nashville’s passing lanes, leaving Nashville with little choices. Most of their attacks eventually found their way back to Willis, and Nashville dominated the opening half of play.
In the 39th minute, Nashville had its best opportunity to score. A counterattack down the right side was initiated by Shaq Moore with a tackle, but Tyler Boyd’s cross to Teal Bunbury was a fraction of an inch too long.
