For the position of running backs coach for the Georgia football team, Kirby Smart resorted to a rival staff.
Josh Crawford of Georgia Tech, a former high school coach at five different schools in the state, is taking over for Dell McGee, who was appointed head coach of Georgia State.
Crawford will oversee the run of the game as well.
During his one season at Georgia Tech, Crawford worked with former Georgia quality control coach Buster Faulkner. He then spent two seasons at Western Kentucky, where he taught receivers for two of those seasons and served as co-offensive coordinator for one.

The wide receivers position, which was filled by bringing in former UGA offensive coordinator James Coley from South Carolina’s staff, initially brought Crawford to Georgia’s attention.
On Monday night, Georgia announced the hiring of Coley and Crawford.
“Having Coley and his family back in Athens is exciting,” Smart remarked. He is an amazing mentor and educator of young men. His prior experience working for our team will ensure a smooth transfer. Regarding Josh, I’ve had the pleasure of watching his profession develop over time and have always been impressed. He has earned this opportunity via his dedication and the notable influence he has had as a football coach in our state.
According to McGee, who made his debut at a press conference on Monday in Atlanta, Smart was in Hawaii last week.
Crawford played running back from 2004 to 2006 at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He holds master’s degrees from Valdosta State (2020) and Georgia (2012).
The product of Montrose, Alabama, won three 6A state titles while serving as an offensive high school assistant coach at Greater Atlanta Christian, Jefferson County, Colquitt County, Lee County, and Valdosta.
