DALLAS — Coming off a 1-3 end to a four-game Eastern Conference road trip, the Dallas Mavericks (34-27) aimed to bounce back with a showdown against the Philadelphia 76ers (35-25) on Sunday, with a 12:00 local tipoff. The Mavs had a flat performance, falling 120-116 against the Sixers, marking the team’s fourth loss in the last five games.

The Mavs opened strong, racing to an 11-0 lead against the Sixers, with Donic’s step-back 3-pointer leading Philadelphia to seek a timeout. The early spike did not last. Dallas allowed a 14-2 run immediately after, resulting in trailing for the first time.

The momentum continued in the Sixers’ favor, with Tyrese Maxey scoring 17 points in the opening session. After he converted on a step-back 3-pointer then converted a floater, Philadelphia moved up 32-22 late to conclude the first quarter. Dallas went from making its first four shot attempts to completing the period shooting 3-16 from the floor the rest of the way.

Doncic heated up to bring the Mavs back to open the second quarter, scoring six consecutive points. After receiving a pass on the trail from Doncic, Kyrie Irving’s finger roll cut the Sixers’ lead to 34-32 with over 10 minutes before halftime. Dallas failed to build on this gain, getting outscored 12-5 and behind 46-37, entering a timeout called midway through the second quarter.

Doncic again attempted to create momentum for the Mavs, scoring six consecutive points using a and-one floater and a step-back 3-pointer. Dallas was unable to generate defensive stops, which led to a sustained disadvantage. Maxey’s basket through contact gave Philadelphia a 12-point advantage.

The Sixers led the Mavs 56–51 at the half, their troubles revolving around different themes. Dallas was behind 14-0 in points off turnovers, having committed 11 turnovers to Philadelphia’s one. The Mavs were outscored 30–16 in points in the paint, and a recurring issue was their incapacity to keep the Sixers inside in drop coverage or on the perimeter.

After the break, the Mavs concentrated more on blitzing Maxey in an attempt to force the Sixers to play 4-on-3. Early in the third quarter, Hield made two jump shots to put the Sixers ahead by double digits. Kyle Lowry then made a corner 3-pointer to increase the lead to 13. Since then, Philadelphia has maintained a double-digit lead.

Late in the third quarter, Philadelphia led by as many as 17 points, with the Mavs continuing their poor execution on both ends. The Sixers dismantled the Mavs on the half-court in the fourth quarter, continuing their lack of momentum.

With 8:32 remaining in regulation,  Jr.’s short-range jumper gave the Sixers an 18-point lead, forcing the Mavs to take a timeout. Later, a step-back 3-pointer from Doncic followed by a pair of made free throws from Irving resulted in the Mavs trailing by a seven-point margin, the closest they came since soon after halftime.

A short-range jumper from Nic Batum and a defensive stop nearly helped the Sixers contain the Mavs’ late rallying push. With less than two minutes remaining, Irving made a pull-up jumper in the paint to get Dallas within five points (110–105), but Harris made a corner 3-pointer to put Philadelphia ahead by eight. Dallas kept trying to come back, but time was running short.

With less than a minute remaining, Harris sank a floater to tie the score after Washington made a putback. Doncic’s three-pointer put the Mavs within five points once more. Dallas almost caused an 8-second infraction, but a review allowed them to keep possession. With 25.1 seconds remaining, Maxey scored two free throws following a foul to put the Sixers ahead 117-110.

Irving’s three-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining put the Mavs within three points, but they were unable to mount a rally while playing the foul game to finish it out.

Tuesday’s matchup between the Mavs and Indiana Pacers will wrap up their three-game homestand.
