Jason Kidd coaching for his job? Mavs ‘Have The Personnel’ to Play Better Defense?
After dropping five of their previous six games, the Dallas Mavericks are starting to get flashbacks to their disastrous season. At the end of the season, head coach Jason Kidd may lose his job if he is unable to turn things around with his club.
The Dallas Mavericks had just finished a season-high seven-game winning streak, but now they have dropped five of their last six games in the most important stretch of their schedule. During their current losing streak, the Mavs have been the league’s worst defensive club. With each loss, we are reminded of their disastrous play in the Play-In Tournament the previous season, when they were reduced to a lottery team.
Jason Kidd, the head coach of the Mavs, is doing his hardest to maintain optimism in the face of all the difficulties, but it doesn’t appear like his squad is responding to him.
Kidd responded, “Yeah, well, we tried everything,” following his defense’s Tuesday 137-point loss to the Indiana Pacers. “Give them credit, we moved from switching to hitting to zone at times. They are among the league’s top offensive clubs. We will return, watch the footage, and see how we can improve since, for us, it is all about the rotations and holding onto corner 3.
“We have some of the best offensive minds in the league, so if we can focus some of that energy on defense, we should have a better chance of getting a stop.”
When questioned about his team’s defensive inadequacies prior to the trade deadline, Kidd frequently claimed that the Mavs lacked size. There shouldn’t be any more justifications now that Dallas has P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford in the mix, and Kidd is aware of that.

Indeed, we have the players [to play better defense]. We have the group, Kidd declared. “Being able to endure a difficult period in March is actually a terrific test for us since it just gets harder in April, May, and June. Therefore, it is an excellent test to ask, “Are we going to let go of the rope?” Will we still be showing up for work?
“Everyone is present at work. Everyone is energetic and has a good outlook. Everyone is attempting to act morally. We simply can’t seem to get things right today, but we have to keep trying. Thursday is our game, and we’ll be stronger.
It is advantageous to have your greatest player lead the defense when it comes to defense. Although Luka Doncic has demonstrated that, when focused, he is a capable defender, his defensive performance varies, maybe as a result of the offensive load he carries every night.
“Everyone does. When asked if Doncic should save part of his offensive energy for the defensive end of the court, Kidd responded, “We all do.”
As we rely on Luka for offensive production—which we do—we need to be able to cover him and make sure that Kai (Kyrie Irving) and the other three players are safe from one another as well. It goes beyond one-on-one. In this league, the players are too skilled to play one-on-one. Collectively, as a team, we need to improve our ball-guarding skills.

“We can complete the play by rebounding; we just need to support one another along the way. We exhibit indications of it. We simply must be; we cannot simply give up the three; we must always act with consistency. Although we’re not being reliable at the moment, we do have the guys who can.”
