Indiana basketball coach Mike Woodson will return for the upcoming campaign, despite a dismal 2023–24 campaign, an insider with the IU athletic administration told Indy Star.
Prior to tonight’s game at Minnesota, the Hoosiers have a 16-13 record this season, having missed the NCAA tournament in each of Woodson’s first two seasons.
Former IU star Woodson has three seasons with a 60-39 total record, which includes a second-place finish in the Big Ten and a trip to the NCAA tournament’s second round.
More: Last year’s raise for Mike Woodson included an unusual adjustment along with some buyout protections.
Woodson, who will age 66 on March 24, has been a coach for over 30 years, having spent the last ten of those years in three different roles as head coach.
During his February radio show, Woodson declared, “I came back to try and put this team in the best position possible, and I’m going to continue to do that.” Even though I’m getting up to 66 years old, I still feel good, am able to move around, and believe that I can still teach the game.
“I’m not sure. Some coaches continue to teach well into their seventies. I’m not sure if I’ll take that action. I’m not sure. But for now, I’ll just take things day by day and year by year. Folks, I’m not leaving anytime soon. Simply said, I’m not.
He went on, “I’m going to keep building this team, put it in the best position, and see where it takes us.”
