You would probably chuckle if someone told you Miami would end the season with a losing record despite having three starters back from a team that made it to the Final Four. But today, it really did come to pass.
In an attempt to snap an eight-game losing run, the Hurricanes traveled to Tallahassee, where they lost 83-75 to close the regular season, their ninth straight setback.
Darin Green Jr. led the way for the Seminoles, scoring a career-high 26 points on eight made three-pointers. Jamir Watkins led the Florida State squad in scoring with 16 points, and he was one of four players to finish in double digits.
Miami shot better from the floor today, but the Hurricanes committed 16 fouls and allowed the Seminoles to score 15 points off of free throws. In addition, Florida State maintained control of the three-point line, which helped them set themselves up for an ACC Tournament bye.
After suffering a knee injury against Boston College earlier in the week, Nijel Pack was ruled out of this game, ending a season in which he appeared in just 24 of Miami’s 31 regular season games.
With a strong 16 point and 17 rebound effort to close the regular season, Norchad Omier may have said goodbye to the Miami team for good at the ACC Tournament. With 17 points, Bensley Joseph did lead the squad in scoring, but his seven turnovers cost them dearly.
After playing poorly at home versus Florida State earlier in the season, Matthew Cleveland also had a strong game. The worst thing that happened to Cleveland was that he ultimately transferred to Miami in the hopes of helping a top ACC team, but the Seminoles had a superior record at the end of the season.
With a losing record at the end of the regular season, any chance of being competitive in the ACC Tournament seems to be gone. The Hurricanes should see activity in the upcoming days as the transfer portal is about to make some big news.
Their season will be on the line when they play their next game, which is on Tuesday when they travel to Washington, D.C. for the conference tournament.
