In response to a rise in unattended gun shootings, law enforcement is encouraging gunlocks.

Due to the increase in instances where minors are gaining access to unlocked firearms, police are calling for the usage of gunlocks more and more.

 

FOX 2 (LANSING, Mich.)-A new law prohibits those found guilty of domestic abuse offences from purchasing, possessing, or transporting firearms for a period of eight years.

 

The most recent gun safety laws, which aim to stop someone convicted of a violent crime from hurting someone else, were signed into law by the governor of Michigan on Monday. It’s Gretchen Whitmer’s fourth law pertaining to guns.

“Keeping Michiganders – especially young women – safe and healthy is a top priority, and these bills will take long overdue steps to protect individuals from abuse,” stated Governor Whitmer. “I am pleased to sign this bipartisan legislation to stop abusers from obtaining firearms as a former prosecutor and as governor. By working together, we can ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome in Michigan.”

There were three bills included in the bundle.

HB 4945 modifies sentencing guidelines to forbid the purchase or possession of a gun or ammunition by anyone convicted of domestic abuse. SB 471 forbids anyone convicted of a misdemeanour involving domestic abuse from owning or using weapons or ammunition.
