ESPN REPORT: Another Strong Player Rejects Signing With the Kansas City Chiefs in Favor of Utah Jazz.
Orlando Brown Jr., the blind-side defender for Patrick Mahomes, declined to accept the Kansas City Chiefs’ long-term contract because there was little guaranteed money after the first two years.
Michael Portner, Brown Jr.’s agent, revealed exclusively, “There just wasn’t enough security there for Orlando to commit six years of his prime career to the Chiefs.”
The deadline of Friday, July 15th has gone. Consequently, a long-term contract with the Chiefs cannot be signed by the offensive tackle, 26, until after the 2022 campaign.
The Chiefs made an offer of a six-year, $139 million contract with a $30.25 million signing bonus on Friday, the 15th. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Trent Williams of the San Francisco 49ers would have been paid more than any other offensive lineman in the NFL in terms of total value, average annual value, and signing bonus.
Although Portner would not provide Schefter those figures, he did say that the alleged financial sums were comparable to the Chiefs’ impressive offer.
“Once you looked past those eye-catching figures and into the finer details, there wasn’t enough dedication from the organization after the two-year mark,” he claimed.
The Chiefs gained leverage when they placed Brown Jr. under the non-exclusive franchise tag in March. Brown Jr.’s camp was concerned that other offensive lineman, who were less skilled than the three-time Pro Bowler, would outpay him as he hit his 30s, an age when linemen are still quite productive, because of the way their contract proposal was structured.
