Painter Ivan Aivazovsky, a Russian-Armenian, completed The Ninth Wave in 1850. It is widely regarded as his best work and among the best marine paintings ever made, if not the best painting ever made. Possibly the most well-known marine painter is Aivazovsky, whose paintings primarily feature the sea and shipwrecks as metaphors for the strength of nature and the weakness of humanity in contrast.

When a series of smaller waves follow one another, the strongest and deadliest wave is referred to as the “ninth wave” by seafarers. It’s the wave that makes sailors believe the worst is behind them. The straw that breaks the proverbial camel’s back is this.

Anyway, Tuesday night’s game saw the St. Louis Cardinals lose 14-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Willson Contreras hit a home run at almost 108 miles per hour in the bottom of the first to score the lone run for the Cardinals. The Cardinals managed six hits in all on the evening, but most of the scoring opportunities were halted by Paul Goldschmidt’s 0-4, three strikeout night in the fourth spot in the order. His -.073 win expectancy added was the second lowest among hitters, only surpassed by Masyn Winn’s -.077.
