Tony Perkins Hones In with Heavy Heart

Tony Perkins understood he had to play.

He was aware that his grandmother would not accept grief as an explanation.

Perkins performed, and each shot evoked a remembrance of her.

In Iowa’s 103-78 victory over North Florida on Wednesday, Perkins scored 21 points.

In mourning for his grandmother’s passing two days prior, Perkins made his first five shots and eight of his ten for the game. After leaving the court for the last time, he went down the Iowa bench one by one, collapsing into the arms of coach Fran McCaffery and his teammates each time.

Perkins worked out on Tuesday and participated in the shoot-around on Wednesday, but he did not practice with the Hawkeyes on Monday.
