Several former Milwaukee Brewers are head coaches in major league baseball.

While Craig Counsell is the most well-known former player to manage in the major leagues, there are many more former Brewers on coaching staffs.
The coaching staff of the Chicago White Sox will include former Brewers reliever Matt Wise as the assistant pitching coach and Jason Bourgeois as the first-base instructor when they travel to Milwaukee on Friday to begin a three-game series.
Many former players that fans might not know are still active in the major leagues, at least in this capacity, can be found by taking a tour of the coaching staffs of Major League Baseball.

Manager of the Cincinnati Reds David Bell played his final game for the Brewers in 2006. In 2008, he started as a Double-A manager with the Reds and worked his way up. He then took positions with the major league teams of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Reds as manager in 2019.

Despite being injured, the rookie manager was there in the clubhouse when the Brewers advanced to the National League Championship Series in 2018. He joined Milwaukee in 2017. 2022 marked the 39-year-old’s final season of play.

This one is already familiar to you. The former No. 2 overall choice in the 2003 draft spent 11 seasons in Milwaukee, where he blasted 148 home runs while wearing the Brewers uniform and was selected to the 2011 all-star team. He now sits on the Brewers bench as Pat Murphy’s right-hand man.
Turner Ward was the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. From 1994 to 1996, he spent three seasons with Milwaukee, hitting.233 with fifteen home runs. He began his career as a major league coach in 2013. He has been with the Cardinals since 2022, serving in that capacity since the previous year.

First base coach of the Washington Nationals, Gerardo Parra
Parra was sold to Baltimore at the trade deadline after being acquired by the Brewers in 2014. Parra continued with the team in 2015 and was productive, having an OPS of.886. With the Nationals, he is in his first season of coaching.

The only pitcher to throw the organization’s first no-hitter without the bullpen’s assistance is Juan Nieves, the assistant pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers. His achievement on April 15, 1987, is forever ingrained in Brewers history. He has a long history of coaching in major league baseball, having held positions as pitching coach with the Miami Marlins and Boston Red Sox. He began coaching in the major leagues with the White Sox in 2008.

Hit coach for the Kansas City Royals, Alec Zumwalt. Although he was never a major league player, he pitched in the Brewers minor league from 2005 to 2007.
