The Seattle Seahawks made history on Thursday night when they selected Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy with the 16th overall pick, landing their highest-graded defensive player and adding a blue chip player to their defensive line right away.
If there’s a drawback to Murphy finding Seattle by surprise, it’s that general manager John Schneider will now have no further selection until No. 81 overall in the third round after opting to stick and choose rather than trade down, as many had predicted would happen. It’s not ideal for a team to not have a second round pick because a historically offensive-heavy first round pushes some very talented defensive players into day two.
