Marvin Harrison Jr. becomes Ohio State’s fifth two-time unanimous All-American

Marvin Harrison Jr. is officially a unanimous All-American. The Ohio State wide receiver earned that honor on Thursday when he was named a first-team All-American by The American Football Coaches Association, giving Harrison a clean sweep of the five major All-American lists — the Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America, the Walter Camp Foundation and the AFCA.

This is the second consecutive season that Harrison has been named a unanimous All-American, doing so as well in 2022. Harrison is the fifth Buckeye to achieve two-time unanimous All-American status, joining fullback Bob Ferguson, halfback Howard “Hopalong” Cassady, running back Archie Griffin and offensive tackle Orlando Pace. He is also only the 11th player in Big Ten history to be named a unanimous All-American multiple times, joining Michigan wide receiver Anthony Carter, Wolverine defensive back Tripp Welborne, Purdue running back Leroy Keyes, Michigan State defensive back George Webster, Illinois wide receiver David Williams and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor.

J.T. Tuimoloau was named second-team All-American by the AFCA. He is the only other Buckeye to be on the ACA All-American lists.

In addition to these honors, Harrison won the 2023 Biletnikoff Award last Friday and was named the Big Ten’s Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year and the Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year last month. He was also a Heisman Trophy finalist, the only non-quarterback to achieve that honor this year, finishing fourth in the voting for the award.

Despite coming into the year considered one of the best wide receivers in college football, Harrison was once again nearly unstoppable during the 2023 regular season. The receiver caught 67 passes for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns while carrying the ball two times for 26 yards and a touchdown in 12 games. Harrison led the Scarlet and Gray in all three receiving categories for the second year in a row.

‌
Harrison had more than 100 receiving yards in eight of 12 games in which he played this season, including recording a season-high of 163 yards against Maryland in early October. He also had at least one receiving touchdown in all but two games in 2023, including four games where he scored multiple touchdowns. Harrison ranked inside the top 10 in the country in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and receiving yards per game (100.8).

With his five-catch, 118-yard game in the rivalry loss at Michigan at the end of the regular season, Harrison became the first Ohio State player to have 15 100-yard receiving games in his career, breaking a tie with David Boston. During the Buckeyes’ game against Michigan State in mid-November, Harrison became the first Scarlet and Gray player to have multiple 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his college career. His 1,211 receiving yards are the fifth-most in a single season for an Ohio State player and his 14 touchdown receptions are tied for the second-most in school history.

Harrison has yet to make an announcement on his future, as he is widely anticipated to be the first receiver taken in the 2024 NFL Draft if he declares. Last week, Harrison said he was still undecided on whether he would forgo his senior year or if he would play in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri on Dec. 29.
