Carabao Cup VAR rules for Manchester United vs. Newcastle United, extra time, and penalty shootouts explained
Newcastle United will play Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup Round of 4.
Newcastle United advanced to the Carabao Cup Round 4 by defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. They were rewarded with a trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United after eliminating the treble winners.
Since Yohan Cabaye’s game-winning goal against David Moyes’ team in December 2013, Newcastle has not triumphed away against Manchester United. Even though Tyneside’s injury list is growing, they will head to Manchester hoping to inflict more suffering on Erik ten Hag’s team.
Newcastle United’s expected starting lineup versus Manchester United as Eddie Howe grapples with a difficult rotation
Amidst the Man Utd cup match and Alexander Isak’s setback, Newcastle United’s “emergency” striker plan was made public.
Is the Carabao Cup using VAR?
At Old Trafford, VAR will not be used. VAR will only be used after the semi-finals, according to Carabao Cup rules.
In the second leg of Newcastle United’s semi-final match against Southampton last season, Bruno Guimaraes received a red card after referee Paul Tierney, who had originally given the Brazilian a yellow card, was urged to modify his call by technology. Goals from both teams in the first leg of that match at St. Mary’s were also disallowed by VAR.
Does the Carabao Cup have penalties and extra time?
Since there won’t be any extra time at Old Trafford this evening, a draw after ninety minutes will mean a penalty shootout will be used to decide the match. Extra time is only used in semifinal matches, much like VAR.
Eddie Howe’s decision in the penalty shootout
Howe was asked if his team had been practising penalties because there could be a shootout if the game is tied after 90 minutes. “We certainly have players that practise penalties on a regular basis,” he said to the Gazette.
“Our core group of six or seven penalty takers enjoys taking penalties and competing against goalkeepers. We have a squad that includes some excellent penalty takers as well as some who may be more hesitant than I was as a player.”It is undoubtedly very, very different from practising them in training when the pressure is on.” I must admit that the guys who have accepted penalties on our behalf for an extended length of time have performed incredibly well.
Newcastle United’s penalty shootout record…
Traditionally, the Magpies have not enjoyed a great record from the penalty spot and have lost eight of the eleven competitive shootouts they have been involved in. However, their first ever penalty shootout win came in the League Cup against Watford back in 2006.
Prior to winning the championship game of the previous season, they had already defeated Newport County in 2021 and then defeated Crystal Palace on penalties. But supporters will always be haunted by their recent shootout losses in this competition against Burnley, Leicester City, and Hull City—especially their shootout loss against the Tigers in the competition’s quarterfinal back in 2016.
