Garrett was double-teamed more often than any other rusher in the NFL during the previous campaign.

I won’t act as though there was any doubt as to who would top this list. I wrote down Myles Garrett’s name before I even considered the compositions for No. 2 through No. 15.

Although it’s obviously difficult to compare players across positions, Myles Garrett has a strong case to be considered the NFL’s best player all around.

Garrett jumped to the top spot in 2022 after ranking as PFF’s second-highest defensive player in 2021.

He received the highest pass-rush grade ever given by PFF to an edge rusher in 2022, 93.5. Give that some thought. Consider all of the incredible seasons of edge-rushing we’ve experienced since PFF’s founding nearly two decades ago. Not one of them received a failing grade.

Garrett was double-teamed more often than any other rusher in the NFL during the previous campaign. Players like Jordan Elliott and Jadeveon Clowney did nothing at all to keep defenses guessing. Beyond that, Garrett was not helped by the Browns’ secondary, which forced opposing quarterbacks to hold onto the ball for excessively long.

Even so, Garrett finished with 26 more QB hits and his second consecutive season with 16.0 sacks.

We are aware that he can play defense as a one-man wrecking crew, but 2023 will be the first time he won’t have to be one. The fact that he will at last have a capable supporting cast surrounding him must be unsettling for every offense the Browns play this season.
