Football news from Europe: Arsenal defeats Everton in a rare victory.

With plenty of juicy talking points from the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, and Serie A, the European club football weekend had it all.

From Manchester United losing to Brighton to Inter Milan crushing AC Milan, from Nice upsetting Paris Saint-Germain to Bayern Munich fighting Leverkusen to a draw. Sunday’s events concluded with Heidenheim winning their historic first game, Arsenal grinding out a victory at Everton, and Chelsea feeling even more frustrated.

SUNDAY ANALYSIS

The Sunday lead: Arsenal wins again but falls short of expectations
Leandro Trossard’s second-half winner against Everton extended Arsenal’s winning streak despite the Gunners’ lacklustre performance and kept them within striking distance of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was benched by manager Mikel Arteta in favour of David Raya, who was signed on loan from Brentford. It was Raya’s first appearance for the team, and it paid off when substitute Trossard, set up by Bukayo Saka, scored the game’s winning goal on 69 minutes from an angle beyond Jordan Pickford. With five games played and fifteen points overall, City leads all teams without a loss this season. Arsenal’s victory moved them to within two points of them.

Although Arsenal hasn’t quite found their playing style that allowed them to lead the table for much of the previous campaign, Arteta will take their ability to win despite lacking star power as a plus. His team fell apart towards the end of the previous season, giving City the opportunity to pass them in the race for the championship. Arsenal’s season began with close victories over Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Fulham at home. Before Sunday’s trip to Goodison, they had not triumphed there since 2017.
