The 2021 NFL racial and gender report card, released on Wednesday by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida, shows that although the NFL is not quite there yet, it has made significant progress toward achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In this year’s report, the NFL scored a B+ for gender hiring practices and a C+ for racial hiring practices, for a total grade of B. The NFL’s 2021 overall score was 81.2, according to TIDES. The NFL scored 75.0 points for gender hiring practices and 88.5 points for racial hiring practices. Several noteworthy all-time highs were reached, such as the proportion of women in vice president positions and the number of women employed by NFL league offices.

Ashley Turner, associate director of TIDES and director of external affairs and partnership relations for the DeVos Program, said, “It is encouraging to see the NFL achieve new levels of diversity and inclusion.” “As a Black woman, I understand first-hand the challenges to advancement and look forward to continuing increases of women of color in the NFL as we open doors for those following the same path.”
