Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for using an anti-gay slur during a postgame interview. The incident occurred following the Hornets’ 115-114 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on November 16, 2024. When discussing the team’s defensive strategy against Giannis Antetokounmpo in the game’s final moments, Ball remarked, “Yeah, we loaded up — no homo — but that’s what we wanted.” The NBA deemed this language “offensive and derogatory,” leading to the substantial fine.

This incident is not isolated within the league. In 2022, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards was fined $40,000 for making inappropriate statements on his Instagram account. Similarly, in 2023, Spencer Dinwiddie made a comparable remark, resulting in a $40,000 fine. The NBA’s increasing penalties reflect its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and its intolerance for discriminatory language.

Following the fine, Ball issued a public apology, stating, “I really didn’t mean anything [by it] and don’t want to offend anybody. I’ve got love for everybody, and I don’t discriminate.” Hornets head coach Charles Lee addressed the situation, emphasizing that such language is not condoned by the organization. He noted that Ball was “obviously very apologetic” and that they discussed the seriousness of the situation and expectations for future conduct.

The NBA’s swift response underscores its dedication to maintaining a respectful and inclusive atmosphere for all players and fans. By imposing significant fines for the use of derogatory language, the league aims to deter such behavior and promote a culture of respect and equality.

Ball, 23, is in his fifth season with the Charlotte Hornets and is averaging 29.6 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.3 rebounds through 12 games this season. Despite his on-court success, this incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a public figure in professional sports.

The NBA’s actions in this case align with its broader efforts to address inappropriate behavior and language among its players. By holding players accountable for their words and actions, the league strives to set a positive example and uphold the values of diversity and inclusion.
