It will be less than two weeks until the 2021 NBA Draft. The Philadelphia 76ers hold their spot at selection No. 28 in the first round, despite the fact that a lot can change over time. Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the Sixers, hinted last month that he wouldn’t rule out moving up, back, or even out of the first round.
But the Sixers plan to choose a new prospect late in the first round if no worthwhile deals are currently crossing his desk. Mock drafts of the big event are all over the internet as it gets closer.
Zach Harper of The Athletic has updated his mock draft, and the Sixers select a gifted guard. Harper made fun of Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu to the 76ers in his most recent installment. But as Dosunmu’s stock rises in the West, he is selected six spots ahead of Philly’s pick in this instance, forcing the Sixers to choose Auburn guard Sharife Cooper.
It’s clear the Sixers need guards. The previous front office administration in Philly demonstrated that it is no longer as crucial to look for players with significant college experience.
For Cooper, who only participated in 12 NCAA games, this is excellent news. He scored 20 points a night on average, but his shooting was lackluster. Cooper needs a lot of improvement at the next level after making only 23% of his field goals and only 39% of his three-pointers.
Cooper isn’t quite the effective three-point shooter the Sixers need. Although it doesn’t imply that Philly would pass on the Auburn guard at pick 28, it does imply that he wouldn’t stand much of a chance to break into the starting lineup in the first year.
Selecting a player late in the first round is always extremely risky and does not ensure that the team making the selection will have a standout player. In the event that the Sixers acquired Cooper, they would probably acquire a project player who would primarily dedicate his rookie season to honing his shooting skills in the G League.
