McFadden, one of the first real football stars at Clemson, is one of three Tigers whose No. 66 jersey has been retired by the university. McFadden was a three-sport standout for the Tigers who played defense, punting, and halfback. He participated in the 1940 Cotton Bowl, the school’s inaugural bowl game. During the era of single-wing offense, McFadden, also known as “The Great,” was a star player. However, punting the ball may have been his strongest play.
