The Eagles are still suffering from Jonathan Gannon’s injury.

On the day of the NFC championship game, Jonathan Gannon, sporting a sulky expression and sunglasses, rolled down the window of his black SUV, faced the camera a car’s length away, and declared, “We’re going to f—ing gut these guys!” as he made his way through traffic to the stadium.

At the time, Gannon was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was traveling to Lincoln Financial Field, where his team would later defeat the San Francisco 49ers 31–7. Josh Johnson and Brock Purdy, two quarterbacks, were knocked out of the game by Gannon’s defense, which also sealed their ticket to Super Bowl LVII.

Gannon was a divisive player during his two years with the Eagles, but following the victory on January 29, his star in Philadelphia peaked. His team finished third in the history of regular season sack totals with 70 and the previous week’s divisional playoff victory over the New York Giants ended in a 38-7 loss.

During an on-field postgame interview with a local television station, Gannon, who had interviewed for multiple head-coach openings during the last two hiring cycles, was asked about his future.
