Not a single Tennessee football player makes it into ESPN’s Top 100 for the 2023 campaign.

Vols Football: Predicting Tennessee's top players for the 2022 season - Rocky Top Talk

Earlier this week, ESPN unveiled its annual ranking of the top 100 college football players, and not a single Tennessee football player was included.

Tennessee’s 2023 campaign was a little lackluster, finishing with a 9-4 (4-4 SEC) record, one ranking victory (over Iowa) and defeats to rivals Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

The fact that no Tennessee players appeared on ESPN’s top 100 list was surprising nonetheless. James Pearce Jr., the starting edge rusher for the first team, Jaylen Wright, the second team running back, and Cooper Mays, the second team center, were the three Vols who made it onto the two AP All-SEC teams.

In his standout sophomore campaign, the 6-foot-5 native of North Carolina recorded 18 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a pick six. He also received the highest PFF grade among SEC players and the third-highest grade among edge rushers nationwide.

In his junior year, Wright was among the SEC’s best running backs, averaging an astonishing 7.4 yards per carry to go along with 1,037 yards and four touchdowns. Wright became the first Tennessee running back to reach 1,00-0 rushing yards since Jalen Hurd did so in 2015, having accumulated over 100 yards in six of the team’s 12 games.

Running backs Ray Davis (No. 75) of Kentucky and Cody Schrader (No. 14) of Missouri both made the list.

Pearce is returning to Tennessee for his junior season, where he is expected to start as a Preseason All-American. Wright, on the other hand, is heading to the NFL following an outstanding junior season.
