On Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers made Jay Woodcroft their head coach, removing the team’s interim designation.

The terms of Woodcroft’s contract will expire in 2024–2025. The agreement’s terms were kept a secret.

Having joined the team in 2015 as an assistant coach, Woodcroft was elevated to interim head coach on February 10 following Dave Tippett’s firing by the struggling Oilers. Under Woodcroft, the Oilers improved even though they were five points out of the playoffs at the time of the change.

The Oilers finished with the third-best record in the league, going 26-9-3, and they scored points in 72.4 percent of their games between his promotion and the season’s conclusion. The Oilers were able to secure a first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Kings and a second-place finish in the NHL’s Pacific Division. The Oilers were forced to travel to Los Angeles for Game 6, which they won, after trailing 3-2 after five games. They then had to come home for Game 7, which concluded the series.
