First pitch: Three things I heard in the clubhouses of the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers clubhouse was abuzz with excitement as the series came to an end on Wednesday afternoon. Kiké Hernandez had returned after being acquired in a trade with the Boston Red Sox, and James Outman had hit a walk-off double on Tuesday night to give the Dodgers an 8-7 victory.

The 26-year-old Outman’s game-winning hit was his most recent season-defining moment. Outman, who appeared in just four games the previous season, has been an important member of the Dodgers this year, particularly as July rolled around. Outman opened the matinee with a single to right field and was slashing.310/.437/.500 heading into Wednesday’s finale. Outman had made 71 plate appearances this month. Afterwards, the Dodgers finally scored a run when he hit an RBI single to left.

He has a remarkable ability to withstand adversity. James struggled for a while there, as Roberts noted, citing his 92 plate appearances in May in which he hit just.165/.261/.291. However, as we’ve discussed numerous times, you place your bets based on the head, age, and maturity. He was steadfast in his planning. Since the break, his work with the hitting coaches and his at-bat management skills have made it difficult for me to believe that he is a rookie. Right now, I believe he’s almost past the rookie stage in my opinion. He is just another player in the Major League Baseball.
