Georgia-Mizzou game gets heated by the CFP.

ATHENS, Georgia The first College Football Playoff rankings and SEC standings highlight the stakes that will be raised when No. 2 Georgia plays No. 12 Missouri on Saturday, putting its 25-game winning streak on the line.

In the first CFP ranking, Ohio State is ahead of Georgia (8-0, 5-0 SEC). A victory over Missouri (7-1, 3-1) would strengthen the Bulldogs’ schedule-based argument for a postseason return.

Missouri, with the highest CFP ranking in school history, arrives in Athens. In addition to moving the Tigers up in the CFP rankings, a victory over Georgia would give Missouri the advantage in the competition to go to Atlanta for the SEC championship game.

Georgia plays No. 10 Mississippi next week and then travels to No. 17 Tennessee in its first of three straight SEC East games against Top 25 teams.

Georgia’s 43-20 victory over Florida last week gave them momentum even though they were without their star tight end Brock Bowers, who is expected to miss a month due to ankle surgery.

Georgia left an impression on Missouri. Coach Eliah Drinkwitz watched as the offense amassed 486 yards in the decisive victory over Florida, thanks to two touchdown passes from Carson Beck and two scores from Daijun Edwards. For Coach Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs, who are two-time defending national champions, it was their 24th straight SEC victory.
