Josh McDaniels is out of a job right now, and the New England Patriots have an opening at offensive coordinator. Could the two teams meet again?

The answer appears to be yes, but there’s a catch.

Whether McDaniels returns to New England depends on whether Bill Belichick, the 24-year head coach of the Patriots and his former boss, is hired to lead the Atlanta Falcons.

Belichick has had two interviews for the position, which involved a meeting with every executive in Atlanta and a trip on Falcons owner Arthur Blank’s yacht.

McDaniels is the front-runner to take over as Atlanta’s offensive coordinator should the Falcons select Belichick; however, if the Falcons choose to look elsewhere, McDaniels suddenly becomes available in New England.

The Athletic stated on the “Pats Interference” podcast on Tuesday, via NESN, “I think there’s a very strong chance he brings McDaniels with him if Belichick gets the Falcons job.” “McDaniels likely rises to the top of the Patriots’ wish list if Belichick is not hired by the Falcons.

McDaniels served as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots twice: from 2012 to 2021 and from 2006 to 2008.

Jerod Mayo, the newest head coach of New England, coached alongside McDaniels from 2019 to 2021. Mayo was a player on the opposing side of the ball during four of McDaniels’ seasons in Foxboro.

With the exception of 2020, when Cam Newton was starting at quarterback, the 47-year-old McDaniels led the Patriots to top-10 scoring offenses in all but one of his 13 seasons there.

After spending 11 of those 13 seasons with Tom Brady, McDaniels showed that his offense could be successful without Brady when rookie Mac Jones made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and New England finished sixth in scoring thanks to a strong rushing attack.
